Morning Reflection: Psalm 89(90): “Reflecting on the Eternal Nature of God…”

Introduction:

Psalm 90 is a morning prayer attributed to Moses, reflecting on the eternal nature of God, the brevity of human life, and the importance of seeking divine wisdom for a meaningful existence. The psalm emphasizes the transient nature of time and calls upon God for guidance and favor in the face of life's challenges.

1. Verse 1-2: Acknowledging God's Eternality

- Teaching: Start your prayer by acknowledging the eternal nature of God. Recognize His existence before the creation of the world.

2. Verse 3-6: Human Frailty and God's Timelessness

- Teaching: Reflect on the transient nature of human life. Despite our brevity, God is everlasting. Seek His wisdom and guidance to make the most of your limited time.

  • See vv. 3-4: Every morning, we have an opportunity to return to God for repentance (return, you sons of men, v. 3). Our LORD is exceptionally patient, that's because a thousand years in His sight are like yesterday, which passed, and like a watch in the night (v. 4; see also 2 Peter 3:8), and His patience is that Heceants no one to perish (2 Peter 3:9). By focusing on the LORD every morning, we are looking for His return at the Second Coming (v. 13), and we are also receiving His mercy, joy, enlightenment, and prosperity throughout each day (vv. 14-17).

2 Peter 3:8-9:

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing: with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning Hispromise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [a]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

3. Verse 7-11: Divine Anger and Human Accountabilityy

- Teaching: Acknowledge the consequences of sin and God's righteous anger. Embrace repentance and seek forgiveness, understanding the weight of being held accountable for our actions.

4. Verse 12: A Prayer for Wisdom

- Teaching: Request God's guidance in using your time wisely. Seek a heart of wisdom to discern God's will and live purposefully.

5. Verse 13-17: Plea for God's Favor

- Teaching: Petition God for His favor and blessings. Ask for His presence in your endeavors, recognizing that true fulfillment comes from aligning your life with His purposes.

In summary, Psalm 90 teaches us to begin our prayers by acknowledging God's eternity, understanding our human frailty, repenting for our sins, seeking wisdom, and earnestly seeking God's favor in all our lives.
